Plants Purchased October 23rd and 24th, 2013

15 Nov

Sky Nursery-

Pansys

‘Peacock Red’ winter kale

Viola odorata ‘Queen Charlotte’

Pacific Natives-

Viola adunca

Cynoglossum grande

(the violet i have tried several times and it doesn’t seem to last long here, hopefully in the sand of the new rockery it will do better. Cynoglossum i have admired in the wild once or twice, but never tried in the garden. Hopefully it will do well, and maybe even seed itself a bit. I wouldn’t mind a drift of it…)

Home Depot-

Cordyline (red leaved)

(hoping this is hardy here… at least i didn’t pay much for it.)

Newcastle Fruit Stand-

Mahonia nervosa

Ceanothus gloriosus ‘Point Reyes’

Lepichinia hastata

(Lepichina hastata is originally from Hawaii, lol. Will be interesting to see if it is indeed hardy here. I’ve always liked the flowers of the Ceanothus, so hopefully it will do well next to the Grevillea. It should like the spot. Mahonia nervosa may get potted up, or tucked in here and there, haven’t decided yet.)

Cynoglossum grande. I didn’t recognize the name. We know it as Hound’s Tooth, seen around the Columbia River gorge (right above hwy 14; milepost 59; near Underwood, WA): strong in the spring, then fading and gone completely by summer’s end. Not much of an understory thereabouts, even less in the way of groundcover other than poison oak, the only and truly dominant master. I think it is too dry for much more.
